Following the school board meeting last night, here are the takeaways:
1) The school board deserves some credit for quickly addressing the nepotism issue and not letting it fester. By not removing Dr. Moss, they fell short of a credible solution. Reviewing hires and re-visiting the nepotism policy in the future are not enough to restore the trust of the public.
2) The local media outlets should be commended for exposing and driving the narrative on this issue. Without them, would anyone had even known this behavior had occurred?
3) The people who took a public stand against nepotism, especially those who signed the petition, deserve a special thanks from all of us. These courageous people took time out of their personal lives to stand up and be heard. They were clear in stating that nepotism and other insider dealing is not something that the people of Beaufort County will tolerate. Kudos to those that should up to last nights meeting.
4) Last but not least, is the leadership of Dr. Moss. By electing not to resign, Dr. Moss has once again made a choice that puts himself before the people of Beaufort County. A true leader would realize that his position will be compromised when he engages people going forward, as they will wonder whether his intentions are true and beneficial for the county or are they self-serving. It will be extremely difficult for him to continue on in this role and to be an effective leader. Only time will tell whether he can overcome the void in trust he has created.
I want to thank everyone who participated. together we made a difference.
