Why this petition matters

Started by Gavin Rolls

RenderWare was a grouping of middleware and software that powered an entire generation of video games and software, such as parts of the Grand Theft Auto series and many best sellers from Electronic Arts (EA) and other software developers. The first iteration of RenderWare was initially released by Criterion Software in 1993, and both RenderWare and Criterion Software would later be acquired in 2004 by Electronic Arts when they bought them. Despite the previous success of RenderWare, the new RenderWare 4 engine would fail to meet EA's initial expectations. Thus, it has been mainly discontinued in the present.

This is why this petition's goal is to see the release of all versions of the RenderWare engine. Its public release would:

  • provide a new avenue for game development with the salvaging of the engine
  • provide insight into how almost an entire generation of games function software-wise
  • help in archival purposes
  • and much more

Public licensing of its code-base and related software could also provide net positives to EA if they chose to license it in a similar fashion to Epic Games' Unreal Engine. That is, they publicly release it, but will receive income from the royalties paid for commercial releases that use portions or all of the software.

Please, help us save what powered multiple generations of software from archival rot in Electronic Arts' servers and help RenderWare see a new light of day by signing.
