E W.T. Harris Blvd New Traffic Signal

E W.T. Harris Blvd New Traffic Signal
The Issue
Location: Rose Heather Court/University Ridge Dr. & E W.T. Harris Blvd
University City South, Charlotte, NC residents face a significant safety issue due to the lack of traffic calming measures along E W.T. Harris Blvd where many are forced to walk or bike along the shoulder to reach the shops and businesses just around the corner. This area is frequented by pedestrians including students, families, and elderly individuals. Despite this fact, there is currently no traffic signal in place to manage the flow of vehicles.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), U.S. pedestrian deaths reached a 40-year high with more than 7,500 pedestrians killed by drivers last year — the highest number since 1981. While we don't have specific statistics for our neighborhood, we can infer that pedestrians are at risk without proper safety measures like traffic signals or crosswalks.
We believe implementing a new traffic signal will not only provide safer passage for pedestrians but also make it easier for residents to turn onto and off of Harris from the adjacent neighborhoods. It's an essential step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members.
We call upon our local government officials and transportation department to take immediate action on this matter. Please sign this petition if you agree that a new traffic signal is needed in University City South for the protection and safety of all its residents.
