Remove Judge Martin Nolan from office.

Remove Judge Martin Nolan from office.
The Issue
As a citizen of Ireland you have more than likely read about the sentences that Judge Martin Nolan hands down. There was a similar petition calling for the resignation of Judge Nolan, which gained 3,000 signatures, 3 years ago. This shows that the sentences being handed down by this Judge are not a new development. He has consistently and persistently handed down extremely lenient sentences for serious crimes for years now. It is unacceptable. The seemingly constant suspended sentences for rape, pedophilia, sexual assaults and assaults so horrendous they ought to be considered attempted murder, are unacceptable and show a complete lack of any sense of justice. A Judge may be removed from office "upon resolutions passed by Dáil Éireann and by Seanad Éireann" for "stated misbehaviour or incapacity". I think that Judge Martin Nolan has shown the country that he is clearly incapable of judging what a reasonable sentence is for serious crimes.
Here are a few examples from the past few years:
- October 2012: Violent sex attack on a 17 year old - Suspended sentence (€15,000 fine to victim)
- December 2012: Possession of child pornography - Suspended sentence.
- July 2013: Sexual assault while 8 year old child was in the same bed - Suspended sentence.
- November 2013: 7,000 images and 21 videos of child pornography - Suspended sentence.
- May 2016: Assault in a car whilst child watched - Suspended sentence.
And a couple of money related sentences:
- June 2015: Unpaid VAT to the Revenue - 18 Months jail time.
- March 2012: Tax-evasion on import duty - 6 years jail time (reduced to 2 years by the Court of Criminal Appeals).
- October 2012: Theft from employer - 3 years jail time (final 16 months suspended).
- June 2012: Importing Valium and selling to a "UK source" - 2 and a half years jail time.
- May 2012: Welfare Fraud - 3 years.
The latest news to come out of Judge Nolan's courtroom is the case mentioned above, where a man viciously beat the mother of his child and ripped out her hair in the car whilst their child was in the backseat. These lenient sentences for extremely violent crimes need to be stopped. You cannot put a higher value on money than you do on people's safety. That is not justice. If you are concerned about what justice you may, or in the case of Judge Nolan, may not get if you fall victim to one of these crimes, then please sign this petition. Let's try to change things in this country, because it doesn't seem like the government are taking any initiative.
