The Issue
In our communities, a majority of those charged with non-violent crimes are struggling with addiction, mental health issues, and related challenges such as homelessness. New York’s bail reform law, which has already resulted in a significant reduction in jail populations, requires us to shift resources away from incarcerationand towards cost-effective, community-based programs that can transform lives for the better. Contrary to some recent discussion, crime rates have fallen and public safety metrics have improved in jurisdictions where similar bail reform measures have been implemented--including New York City. We support any improvements to the new law that increase public safety and advance justice.
