Durham North Carolina was built by blacks for blacks!
The Bull city has a rich history of African American commerce and bustling black communities. In the 1960’s, during the height of the civil rights era, all that was shattered with the “Urban renewal program” This initiative included the construction of highway 147 right through the middle of Durham’s most prominent black neighborhood: the Hayti. Coupled with red lining and other covert segregation tactics; Durham’s black community was reduced to a shell of its former self. In light of today’s political/racial climate, the need for reform is ever so evident! The poverty, displacement and discrimination that grips black people across the country has called for revolution! Unfortunately we can not change the world but we can change the socioeconomic status of the black and brown people here in our city! Time and time again, study after study have shown the DIRECT CORRELATION between poverty and crime. History has a habit of connecting BLACK AND BROWN PEOPLE WITH CRIME AND POVERTY and have treated them horrifically because of the poverty that systemic racism has inflicted upon the minority population.
DURHAM CAN CHANGE THAT! by giving black and brown peoples a fighting chance and a fair shake at restoring relations with traditional American society. THE DURHAM RENEWAL PROJECT DOES JUST THAT! With police reform and putting resources and infrastructure back into the community, the minority citizens here in Durham can take their seat at the table once again and enjoy the fruits the tree of human kind has to offer. WITH YOUR SIGNATURE AND SOLIDARITY, WE CAN RESTORE DURHAM! Bring back the Durham of old where ALL of its citizens lived in economic bliss.
