Stop Killing Pit Bulls just because they are Pit Bulls

The Issue

It came to my attention after a kind couple found two dogs and took them to the SPCA in Durban. One the photo above was a Pit bull and the rescuers were told that she would be put to sleep in 7 days if the owner with the ownership paperwork did not com forward. This dog has a lovely nature and I thought it was totally unfair for a perfectly good dog to be put to sleep just because of its breed. The rescuers have been back and forth as they are very concerned and I emailed the SPCA and got the reply below:

Hello Melanie

The two animals brought in from the M19 are here and waiting for their owners to collect them. We will access them after the 7days and put them up for adoption. Yes, this Pitbull does have a lovely nature and deserves a chance for a better life. We do not home Pitbulls that are aggressive or show any signs of being unpredictable especially if they are strays as we do not have their background information.
We will work closely with the Pitbull Club to try find Macey, that’s what I’ve called her, a suitable home.

I am so glad that Macey hopefully will be saved but if it hadn't been for the rescuers concern and raising the issue on Social Media, the beautiful, well natured dog will have been put to sleep, purely because she is a Pit Bull. While i am ecstatic about Macey being given a second change. This petition is for all the other Pit Bulls in the future that may not have been so lucky as Macey with concerned rescuers. Breed Specific Discrimination does not make sense to me, and every dog should be treated on its own individual merits, not generic stereotyping.

I firmly believe that it should be the deed not the breed. All dogs can behave aggressively if handled improperly. Just recently in the USA a pit bull saved a whole family and the other dogs by waking each person up and alerting them to the fact that the house was on fire. This pit bull went back inside to get the last dog because it was too scared to move, so the Pit Bull brought it out by the scruff of its neck. Not the actions of a dangerous animal. The excuse that you don't know if the pit will be used for fighting is a very poor excuse as all dogs may become bait dogs, not just fighters and that you 'euthanize' because you don't know the dog's background because its a stray obviously covers all dogs not just Pit Bulls and is therefore discrimination. Other SPCA's in KZN itself do not practice discrimination purely because of the breed as do most rescue groups. As I said it should be the deed not the breed and not to judge a book by it's cover.http://www.cesarway.com/breed-specific-legislation
