The Issue

Icelandic is a North Germanic language, based upon the Norwegian settlers who used the extinct Norn and Old Norse dialects. As the population of Iceland is small, and there are only about 314,000 native speakers, it's in danger of being a dying language as the population of Iceland is small, and there are only about 314,000 native speakers. Yet, I (and many others), want to avoid this possibility and keep such a beautiful language alive!

I have been wanting a proper course to learn Icelandic from, but nothing seems to be as good as I know Duolingo would be. I have been following the thread for “I want to learn Icelandic” on Duolingo for quite some time and it has been up for about 7 years. Sadly I heard it is being taken down soon. Additionally, Duolingo has also removed their volunteer program and incubator! For the past 6 years I have seen countless people comment and discuss how they would like to learn the Icelandic language on Duolingo, however this wish has never come to fruition... I think it’s about time that it did!

We need Icelandic people, Icelandic learners, and the Duolingo community to unite together to make this happen! So reach out to anyone else you know!

So if you want Duolingo to add an Icelandic course, please sign this petition and consider supporting this endeavor! Share this petition on Twitter @Duolingo with the hashtags: #Duolingo #DuolingoIcelandic !!

Also, if you’re Icelandic yourself and sign the petition, please make it known! I know many Icelanders themselves want to keep their language alive! Additionally, if you’re Icelandic and would like to contribute to the course for Duolingo, please say so when you comment! (This will help Duolingo know how important this is to everyone.)
