OUSA urges the DCC not to adopt the following four local alcohol policies proposed

The issue

A) A 3am close time for establishments.

B) A one way door policy between 1am-3am.

C) A ban on shot sales after midnight.

D) The clearance of outdoor seating areas as early as 11pm.

These proposals:

-Encourage alcohol consumption in less regulated, less supervised and harder to police environments.
-Encourage rapid alcohol consumption before drinks cannot be served and closure times.
-Encourage bars to raise prices to compensate for decreased sales. This encourages further pre-loading to as people seek to avoid purchasing alcohol at establishments.

Dunedin night life, which establishments form an important part of, is enjoyed by many. Students often choose Otago University due to Dunedin’s vibrant and diverse social scene.

Gardies, the Cook and Monkey have all closed recently. These proposals explicit aim is to reduce night time establishments revenue. This puts the survival of even more establishments in jeopardy.

Let's ensure the DCC hears our voices.
