Protect the Young Mums' Unit

The Issue

Scottish Government research claims that young mothers during pregnancy and following birth, “are the most vulnerable groups and are likely to face significant disadvantages both economically and educationally. It is important to have measures in place that can break this cycle of poverty and ensure that children growing up in Scotland have the best possible start in life, with access to the same opportunities across the board. [ ] The research also shows that young mothers have specific needs in terms of the support they require and how it should be delivered. With the right support in place, opportunities and outcomes for younger mothers and their children could be greatly improved."

We, the undersigned, recognise the first class service that young mothers and their babies in Dundee have access to through the YMU.  We call on Dundee City Council to protect that service from cut backs to staff and/or facilities.  We ask that the Council, in line with Scottish Government legislation, support young mothers as learners with additional support needs, providing for them a principal teacher who can oversee their education and their care throughout their time at the YMU.  We ask that the service remains with an onsite nursery so that young mothers and their babies are not further disadvantaged.  The increasing success of the YMU should be protected and we ask the Council to acknowledge the inevitable erosion of the YMU if the current proposals are agreed.
