Hi
I received a very interesting email from Cormac Devlin, our local counsellor which I am pasting below.
To me, the most important thing is that 43% of responses came from people under 44 who were all mainly positive. Unfortunately, due to how expensive it is to live in the area a majority of these would either be living at home with their parents or renters so may not be able to have the same long-term ties to the area.
Only 30% came from people over 55 which were primary negative but would make up a large proportion of local residents.
The above graph also does not take into account the 1,000 people that voted who do not even come from the area but were mainly all positive, for example cyclists in Ennis or green party members in Tralee. When we take this non-DLR cohort out of the vote it shows that 54% of locals did not want to go ahead with Living Streets or wanted changes
Due to the very nature of having an online survey (biased against older people) and missing out mail drops in areas which were very against the project eg Dalkey, DLCoCo has managed to get the outcome they would like.
Cormac has included the email addresses of all counsellors who will be voting on the project in the next few days. Please take an opportunity today to email them with your thoughts if you get a chance. It is a simple as copying and pasting all the email addresses into an email and saying that you don’t want the Living Street project to go ahead as is and would like it revisited.
Local elections are coming up soon and I have told all counsellors that I will be emailing this group with how the counsellors voted
Many thanks for your time today, and please take two minutes to email the counsellors below with your thoughts, otherwise I fear there will be gridlock in all the roads you use
Dave
Dear David,
I hope you are keeping well. Cllr Tom Murphy was in contact to raise your concerns about the Living Streets Part 8 due to be considered by the Council (possibly as early as Monday 11th March).
You will be aware Cllr Justin Moylan and Cllr Michael Clark held a large public meeting in December to let people know about the changes being proposed by Council officials.
Officials briefed Councillors on the recent public consultation they carried out on the proposal. While a majority of the 7,057 submissions from across the countryfavoured the proposal, there was significant opposition to the proposal from local residents and businesses in Deansgrange, Monkstown, Dalkey, Sandycove, Sallynoggin and Glasthule.
Additionally, older cohorts appear to have been under-represented (with only 14% of submissions attributed to them versus them comprising about 20% of the local population). Questions have also been raised about the Council not dropping fliers informing people in Dalkey and parts of Blackrock and the impact this may have had on submissions.
Officials have indicated they intend to proceed with the scheme as proposed and the matter will be brought before Councillors where they can vote to either accept, reject or amend the plan.
Cllr Justin Moylan and Cllr Michael Clark are not happy with the proposal and they will be tabling amendments, including one to remove Tivoli Road from the scheme.
They will be calling for roll call votes which will be recorded.
Hopefully they will get support from the other Councillors, however if you and your group have not done so, it would be worth emailing Councillors over the next few days to provide any last minute feedback ahead of the vote. I've included the latest details for all 40 and the TDs below for convenience.
If there is anything else I can assist with please get in touch.
Kind regards,
Cormac
