Duke Energy Lowrance Substation Project
The Issue
To: Duke Energy Executives, [Kannapolis City/ Cabarrus County Planning Commission], and [North Carolina Public Service/Utility Commission]
We, the undersigned residents, homeowners, and community members of [Lee Avenue / Margaret Avenue / Lowrance Avenue /Community], strongly oppose Duke Energy’s proposed construction of an electrical substation at [10 acres located at the corner of Lee Avenue and Lowrance Avenue].
We call on Duke Energy to immediately halt plans for this specific location and select an alternative site located within an existing industrial or commercial zone.
Placing a high-voltage industrial utility structure directly inside a quiet, populated residential neighborhood causes severe, irreversible harm to our community. This project threatens us through:
Property Value Loss: Homes near industrial utility installations suffer drastic declines in market and resale value, up to 45%, unfairly penalizing hardworking homeowners.
Persistent Noise Pollution: Substations emit a constant, low-frequency humming and buzzing noise that destroys the peace and quiet of our residential environment.
Aesthetic and Environmental Damage: The massive equipment, tall security fencing, and incoming power lines destroy neighborhood sightlines, disrupt our local tree canopy, and degrade the natural character of our area.
Quality of Life and Safety Concerns: Increased industrial traffic, heavy utility vehicle access on residential side streets, and the close proximity of high-voltage equipment create safety risks for children, pedestrians, and local pets.
Duke Energy has a corporate responsibility to minimize community disruption and place infrastructure where it belongs—in commercial and industrial areas—rather than in our backyards.
We demand that Duke Energy cancel the current location proposal, conduct a transparent public review process, and relocate this project to an appropriate non-residential zone.
