Keep Elementary School Librarians in Dublin City Schools

Keep Elementary School Librarians in Dublin City Schools
The Issue
Dublin City Schools will be losing their Elementary School Librarians next year. As a former Dublin City School Elementary Librarian, a mother, a teacher, a parent, a school librarian, and a doctoral candidate, I have seen the vetted research indicating that good school librarians increase literacy, test scores, and make a difference in 21st Century learning. They make a positive impact towards lifelong learning. School librarians should be in EVERY school, but should ALWAYS be in Elementary Schools where the love of learning begins. School librarians are special people. They collaborate with teachers They provide essential resources and the newest and most loved stories. They use their expertise to share differentiation tools with teachers and administration. They bring in amazing authors--which truly inspire children to become passionate about reading and writing. They host book fairs and celebrate literature through programs, reading holidays, and reading challenges. They are at a colleague's side ready to co-teach or lead lessons in research. They know about the best databases. They take risks and trial maker spaces and other iterative programming activities. They make resources equitable to all. No one can replace the professional school librarian. Dublin City Schools needs to figure out how to save money in some other way rather than eliminating the elementary school librarian positions.
