The Issue

The Colchester Gazette and its sister title the Braintree and Witham Times are calling for action to improve the A120, a major route for commuters and freight transport in Essex.

Stretching from Marks Tey to Braintree, this road serves as a vital artery for both local residents and businesses, as well as a crucial part of the national strategic road network.

Despite its importance, the A120 remains a single carriageway, plagued by congestion, frequent accidents, and severe delays, making it one of the most dangerous roads in the region.

As it stands, the A120 is a road that no longer meets the demands of modern transportation. With rising traffic levels, the risk of accidents has increased, putting lives at risk on a daily basis. Statistics from the Department for Transport reveal that roads with higher lanes often witness better road safety and fewer accidents. Dual carriageways are proven to improve traffic flow, reduce delays, and most critically, enhance safety for both drivers and passengers.

Additionally, congestion on the A120 has a ripple effect on the broader regional economy. The dualling of this road would boost economic productivity by improving connectivity, ensuring timely deliveries, and attracting new businesses to the area.

Investing in the dualling of the A120 aligns with both local and national priorities. It supports economic growth, enhances network resilience, and positions the region to better handle future transport needs. It also aligns with the government's commitment to improve infrastructure and achieve net-zero emissions by promoting smoother and more efficient vehicle movements.

We call on the Department for Transport to prioritise and fund the dualling of the A120 between Marks Tey and Braintree. By doing so, we can provide a safer, more resilient, and economically fruitful future for the East of England and beyond.
