Request LCUSD Governing Board Not Adopt Everyday Math for K-5

Request LCUSD Governing Board Not Adopt Everyday Math for K-5
The Issue
LCUSD is poised to select Everyday Mathematics for K-5 at its next Governing Board meeting. Find out here why many parents are deeply concerned and taking action against this decision:
We, the undersigned parents of LCUSD elementary students, ask the Governing Board not to adopt Everyday Mathematics for K-5.
We believe that LCUSD has not adequately researched and addressed documented concerns associated with Everyday Mathematics:
- Everyday Mathematics (past and present versions) has a history of receiving harsh criticism from many math experts and educators. Google it and see for yourself!
- Everyday Mathematics has been tried and abandoned by many districts across the country, from California to Washington to Texas and Massachusetts. Efforts to replace it, led by both teachers and parents frustrated with the program, continue in districts such as Palo Alto and Conejo Valley.
- The selection process in La Canada has not included any outreach to districts that have abandoned Everyday Mathematics to understand the basis for their struggles and the ultimate rejection of the curriculum.
- Parents were not included in the Textbook Adoption Committee process, and were only invited to a limited review of the textbooks late in the selection process.
Given these concerns and the shortcomings in the selection process, we object to this selection of Everyday Mathematics at this time.
