Schools and colleges that don't become fully inclusive should be derecognized
The Issue
Hello, my name is Ruchita, I'm suffering from Osteogenesis imperfecta. I'm 21 years old pursuing Bachelors degree in Arts. Osteogenesis imperfecta is a rare genetic disease in which the bones are fragile and can break easily. But that doesn't bother me.
My education has been very difficult because of lack of awareness among the public and also inaccessible infrastructure in schools. But that hasn't stopped me from following my dreams.
The only thing that bothers me is that most of our Indian public places make us feel more disabled than we are because of inaccessible surroundings. Sign my petition.
I'm pursuing distance education. But whenever I go out, I face a lot of difficulties due to inaccessible infrastructure. It is not just me, India's 2.1% disabled population is facing the same and the number equals to 21,906,769 people.
Did you know that the 2019 State of the Education Report for India: Children with Disabilities also highlighted that 27% of students with disabilities have never attended an educational institution?
Several countries have stepped in to make schools and colleges accessible to all.
I urge the government to take a few small steps that will help us immensely.
To begin with:
1. Make our classrooms on the ground floor of school and college buildings.
2. Introduce elevators in school and college buildings.
3. Set up ramps and disable-friendly access points for water and washrooms.
We all know that education is fundamental right for all children no matter whether they perfect or imperfect. There is no perfect time to begin with unless we are committed to bring change at this moment rather than waiting for the right time.
Please sign my petition so that we can bring about a change.
Thank you
