On May 31, Shae Sanders and Aurora Rush were surrounded and attacked by a mob of at least ten people at Cypress Black Bayou Park in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The couple says they did not fight back.

Sanders was taken to the hospital by ambulance, received stitches above their eye, and faces ongoing medical concerns related to injuries from the assault. Rush suffered a concussion, temporarily lost vision in one eye, and sustained severe bruising across her body.

Both say they never threw a punch. Yet Bossier Parish police charged Sanders with disturbing the peace and Rush with fighting and offensive language. Together, those charges carry potential prison sentences of up to a year and a half. It is unclear whether any of their attackers were charged.

Making matters worse, despite Rush having a female gender marker on her driver's license, police booked her into a men's jail under a name she says belonged to one of her attackers.

"I'm more angry at the response of the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office than I am at the people who beat us up," Rush told journalist S. Baum. "They further victimized me. It's an egregious miscarriage of justice."

The couple's attorney, Courtney Newburry, called the attack "targeted, calculated, [and] had been simmering all day," linking it to rhetoric that "demonizes and dehumanizes transgender people."
