Drivers test made mandatory for anyone over the age of 70
The Issue
I believe it is in everyone’s best interest to make it mandatory for individuals to retake a driving test once they reach the age of 70. Sadly, older drivers have been involved in many accidents that result not only in minor and major injuries but, in some cases, life-threatening injuries and even fatalities.
While I fully understand that older individuals deserve independence and the ability to maintain normalcy in their lives, this measure is about ensuring everyone’s safety—both theirs and others on the road. It may seem unfair to some, but by retesting, we can help prevent accidents and make our roads safer.
If a person can pass the test, they will continue to drive. If not, it ensures that only those capable of doing so safely are behind the wheel. I am asking you to sign this petition to make it mandatory for individuals aged 70 and older to retake a driving test, with further testing every 10 years after that. Together, we can make a difference in road safety.
Some Statistics:
• In 2022, over 1.1 million police-reported crashes involved drivers aged 65 and older.
• Fatal crash rates start increasing notably after age 74. Drivers aged 85 and older have the highest rate of fatal crashes per miles traveled.
• Among those aged 65 and older, 58.6% of fatalities in traffic crashes involved the older driver, and 8.4% involved passengers also aged 65 or older.
• Older adults are also more likely to be involved in multi-vehicle crashes at intersections, with 39% of fatal crashes involving those aged 80 and older.
Though older adults tend to drive fewer miles than younger drivers, their risk of being involved in serious crashes increases due to factors like slower reaction times and diminished sensory abilities.
