Drivers MUST stop if they hit a Cat

The Issue

It is estimated that around 230,000 cats are killed on UK roads each year, which averages out to about 630 cats per day.

I have been a cat owner all my life. It wasn’t until a close friend of mine lost her cat whilst witnessing him be hit by a car that sped off following the collision, that I found out there is no legal requirement to stop if you hit a cat. The law states you must stop if you hit a dog or farm animal. Why not cats ? A cat is an equal pet to a dog. The pain of losing a cat is not less than the pain you feel if your dog was run over and killed. Cats are animals, but above all are family pets. I believe there should be a change in the law that demands if you are aware you have hit a cat you legally are required to stop and alert either a local service, try to find the owner or take the animal to the nearest vets. Each cat deserves the exact same empathy and respect in their last moments as any other animal the law says you must stop for after a collision. This is something so important to a cat owner. If this law can be put in place that helps to relive a small part of the grief of losing a pet in this horrific way it is a win for anyone who owns a cat. I will reiterate that empathy should not just stop at dogs and farm animals. Cats should be included in this protection. Act now.
