Drive 35 Las Vegas

The Issue

A solution to help save lives here in Las Vegas is to Drive 35.   Please join me in helping reduce speed limits from 45mph to 35mph by signing this petition.  This will help in reducing the number of traffic accidents and reduce the number of pedestrians being struck while walikng on side walks or crossing the street.

A year ago I witnessed another tragic accident while walking on Hualapai and Alta.  This may have been avoided with a 35 mile per hour speed limit.

I have witness so many accidents at the same intersection over and over again, all with speed limits 45mph.

It is alarming that pedestrians are walking on these streets, next to cars that are driving 45mph right next to them. Just the other day I witness a school bus drop 15 students off on Flamingo and Buffalo and they stood on the corner while cars raced passed them at 45mph.

I understand the City of Las Vegas doesn't have control of the streets mentioned above but I feel that the CIty of Las Vegas needs to work with Nevada Department of Transportation to make this change.

I also understand that according to some initial police reports, deaths occur as a result of involved drivers running a red light or other reasons.  I still believe we can assume that reducing speed will save lives by reducing the number of accidents.

I believe buffer lanes in-between sidewalks and roads do help save lives in combination with reducing speeds from 45mph to 35mph.

I was shocked when I moved here three years ago to see how fast cars were driving next to pedestrians.  I was also shocked to see how many pedestrians were getting killed. It seems like a common thing to see on the news now.  I was also surprised to see how many accidents were happening around me.  I was also surpised to see 45mph speed limits.  In the city of Chicago where I was raised busy streets mostly are 35mph or 30mph and no streets are 45mph.  I understand people will still speed but I feel that if the speed limit was reduced to 35mph there would be less accidents here in Las Vegas.

This simple cost effective solution will work and together we can help save the lives by reducing the number traffic accidents.  I understand not being able to drive 45mph will cause a few extra minutes in driving from point A to point B but the reward of safety is worth the extra time.  I also understand this will impact the RTC and their schedules but the adjustments can be made to their schedules to help save lives.

I would like to roll out Phase One of Drive 35 Las Vegas.  This will include the shaded out area on the image associated with this petition.

West/East Streets: Charleston, Sahara, Desert Inn, Spring Mountain, Flamingo and Tropicana. (West of Vegas Strip)

North/South Streets: Town Center, Hualapai, Fort Apache, Durango, Buffalo, Rainbow and Decatur.

By signing this petition you support Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reducing speed limits from 45mph to 35mph in the Phase 1 Area of Drive 35 Las Vegas, mentioned above.  You also believe that this change will save lives.

Phase 1 will help NDOT collect data to see if the rest of Las Vegas and Henderson would benefit from adopting Drive 35.  You also support the City of Las Vegas working with NDOT to make this happen.  By signing this petition you also promise not accuse the City of Las Vegas or NDOT of creating a speed trap and acknowledge they are making the change to saves lives.
