Drew Barrymore, Please Reconsider: A loving request from Friends & Supporters

The Issue

On Sunday, September 10, Drew Barrymore announced that her talk show was coming back to production despite the ongoing Writers Guild strike. The WGA has made clear in no uncertain terms that this is crossing their picket line, and Drew’s writers have expressed the hurt this decision to continue the show without them has caused.

Drew — as your friends and supporters, we want to make it clear that signing this petition is just our way of asking You to reconsider a decision that has caused harm in your community. Countless writers and actors are working so hard right now to maintain solidarity with each other in support for a better future for all of us. We know that you care about the jobs of your crew and are trying to make this decision with empathy and humility. But please believe us that true astute humility is listening to the thousands of writers and actors who are saying this decision will cause long term damage to the future of creative work.

You are an amazing person who has modeled care in our community for decades — You have given us so much, inspired a lot of good, and shown a lot of compassion and patience to others — and we want to show you that same respect and compassion in return. Being able to recognize a mistake, listen, and change course with grace is something we all know you are capable of. If your show does continue forward, we hope that every episode will interview people on strike so they can have their voices heard in this critical time.

We know this feedback from the world is a lot to digest and it can really bruise the heart, mind and ego. But we know You are strong enough to  take it in and do something with it that will show the world you DO care about the future of creatives — and you DO care about the outcome of this strike.

Let this petitions names reflect the community which believes You can do better. This isn’t intended to curate cancel culture, but rather community culture calling on You to be Your best self. We are loud not because we have abandoned You but because we are right here still daring to believe that You have the heart to hear us. If You do change Your decision to continue with Your show, we will support that vulnerable shift. Please #DrewTheRightThing
