The Little Wicomico River Jetty at Smith Point is more than a local navigation channel — it is a gateway to the Chesapeake Bay. When access is blocked, it affects boaters, watermen, recreational users, and the fisheries that sustain us all across the region.
Did you know--
⚓ A Critical Navigation Point: Nearly equidistant from Annapolis and Norfolk (~70 miles by water), the Jetty lies where the Potomac River meets the Chesapeake Bay, in an area referred to as the Middle Bay, providing access to both Virginia and Maryland fishing seasons.
🛶 Public & Recreational Access: A public ramp at Smith Point Marina connects residents and visitors alike to the Bay for fishing, boating, and recreation.
🌎 Part of Our Heritage: The southernmost part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail wraps around the Little Wicomico River and even includes a free car/bike/pedestrian ferry at Sunnybank in Ophelia, VA.
Safe and reliable access to the Chesapeake Bay is vital to our region’s economy, culture, and way of life. It sustains fisheries, supports tourism and marinas, and preserves our shared Chesapeake heritage.
👉 Please ask your friends, fellow anglers, boaters, visitors — and everyone who loves Chesapeake Bay seafood — to join us. Every signature shows local, regional, state, and federal leaders that this project is urgent and that they have the strong community support needed to fund dredging the Little Wicomico River Jetty.”
