A big thank-you to County Administrator Luttrell Tadlock for providing this update to the Board of Supervisors — and to the Rappahannock Record for helping keep the community informed about the latest progress on the Dredge the Little Wicomico River Jetty project.

Here is a summary of the current status on the dredging permit application:  On October 7, Northumberland County, along with the Northern Neck Planning District Commission (NNPDC), Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Norfolk and Baltimore Districts-both required as the project sits at the Virginia-Maryland border), held a pre-application meeting to review federal requirements for the dredging project. A follow-up meeting with VIMS is scheduled later in October to address technical questions for the Joint Permit Application.

Several potential dredge material placement sites have been identified both north and south of the jetty, pending property owner and oyster ground holder approvals. The County and NNPDC are also preparing for the Virginia Waterway Maintenance Fund grant application, which is due in spring 2026, to help fund dredging once permits and disposal sites are finalized.

We’re grateful to Northumberland County, Mr, Jerry Davis of NNPDC, VIMS, and the Army Corps of Engineers for keeping this important process moving forward. Every step brings us closer to restoring safe navigation through the Little Wicomico River Jetty — a critical gateway to the Chesapeake Bay.

💪 As of today, our Change.org petition has reached 966 signatures!
Let’s keep the momentum going — every signature counts in showing the strong community advocacy needed to compete for grant funding and make dredging a reality.

2026 is only 77 days away!
