Prohibited from touching Aaliyah's unreleased music.
The Issue
On August 25, 2001, the world lost an R&B icon and true music luminary. The late, great Aaliyah departed this life at the young, tender age of 22. Even though her career lasted a mere 7 years with only three studio albums, the "Princess of R&B" left an indelible mark on the music industry as a whole and carved out a niche that was truly her own. With only three studio albums, Aaliyah's impact on music is unquestionable, as is her legacy, which we all have cherished and held dear to our hearts. Fast forward 11 years later, a crazed, stalker-ish Aaliyah stan by the name of Aubrey "Drake" Graham has decided to contaminated our precious Aaliyah's legacy with that Young Money Cash Money Baby nonsense that he calls music. The newest track to Aaliyah's repertoire is the minimalist "Enough Said." And even though it was great to hear her singing again, it was definitely not without its problems. Drake has decided to use Aaliyah's unreleased material to take pot shots at other artists, all the meanwhile excluding Aaliyah's closest collaborators and friends. Now, as great as it is that he's a fan of Aaliyah's, no new music should be touched if it does NOT include the likes of Missy Elliott and Timbaland, as they knew Aaliyah best and knew the direction that she would have wanted her music to go. Drake, however, did not know Aaliyah personally but has somehow taken it upon himself to find a way to profit from her death and unreleased music. This is unacceptable, as Drake is not handling Aaliyah's music the way that it should be handled. It is disrespectful and completely diminishes the significance of Aaliyah's legacy that we have all cherished for the past 11 years. Aaliyah's music should not be used as a platform for one artist to diss another artist...nor should it be used as some get rich quick scheme by an individual who's looking to exploit the legacy of an icon.
