Petition to Preserve the University of Evansville’s Tin City Archaeological Site
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that Chaplain Tammy Gieselman, President Thomas Kazee, and/or Chair of the Board of Trustees Linda White provide written assurances that construction of any labyrinth or drive will not disturb the archaeological remains west of Neu Chapel. If no one is able to offer such assurances, we then ask that deliberations over the location and design of the project take place in a transparent way with open meetings and that representatives from the Department of Archaeology and Art History be given an opportunity to make their case for the preservation of Tin City before the bodies in the Administration and Board of Trustees that will make the final decision to approve the labyrinth and/or drive projects.
This matters to us because Tin City is:
-a training ground for the next generation of archaeologists;
-an irreplaceable remnant of our university’s past and present identity;
-the only on-going archaeological excavation on a college or university campus in the country;
-a central part of the Department of Archaeology and Art History’s recruitment plan;
-and, as the only archaeological site on campus, a finite resource.
