Ellie Glick started this petition to Principal, Bethesda-Chevy Chase Dr. Shelton L Mooney and

I graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase (B-CC) High School, class of 2013. The B-CC mascot is a "baron." The definition of a baron is "a member of the lowest order of the British nobility," "lord," or "an important or powerful person in a specified business or industry." Basically, an important, wealthy person.

Reading stories from the Instagram account @blackatbcc from current (and former) black B-CC students who encounter(ed) pervasive racism at the school made me think. This school is proud of its "diversity," but also clearly alienates its black students and students of color.

Why is the mascot a baron? Why is the baron--a wealthy, important person--a white person (shown with both the color image and the mascot costume)?

This is not the same as having a mascot be someone from a minority group--like the "Redskins" or the FSU "Seminoles," but it's still off. We are cheering on the "barons" and choosing this symbol--a wealthy, white person--to represent the entire school and all of its students.

Can we get away from having a mascot be a HUMAN in general? Can we choose a better mascot to represent everyone at B-CC?

Please join me in signing this petition to change the B-CC mascot. We can do better.
