Here is the text of an email I just sent to Dr. Scarborough and the University of Akron Board of Directors: Dear Dr. Scarborough + University of Akron Board of Directors— I attach a petition containing 1,574 signatures in support of restoring the University of Akron Press’ staff and operations. You’ll notice the broad geographical reach represented: Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada, as well as many states across our country. As you’ll also see, especially in the comments I also attach, many of the signatories are University of Akron alumni, residents of the city or its immediate vicinity, and individuals working at other university presses who testify eloquently to the value of such presses and specifically to the quality of the University of Akron Press’ publications, despite its small staff. The University of Akron, the American literary community, the Akron region, and the terrific people—Tom Bacher, Carol Slatter, Amy Freels, Mary Biddinger, and the talented University of Akron interns they hire semester after semester—who’ve made the University of Akron Press the beloved place it is all deserve to have full funding and operations restored.
