Dear Students of the Mapua schools,
Thank you for bringing to our attention your concerns about the offering of fully online classes in our schools. I hope the following letter addresses these concerns. Before anything else, let it be said that between fully online and blended learning, the Mapua schools prefer blended learning because it combines the best of the face-to-face and online modes. This is not to say, however, that the fully online mode does not have a place in the system. We have used it to grant student petitions for additional sections during registration, to open sections during rush hour for students who want to avoid heavy traffic, and to offer
master’s degree programs to working professionals.
Under the present COVID-19 ECQ, fully online education can enable students to avoid delay in
their progression through school or their time-to-graduation. Given the suddenness of events,
the shift from blended learning to fully online cannot be but drastic. Difficulties in
implementation that may hamper the teaching & learning process may thus be expected. We
therefore will be offering online courses on a “CAN PASS; CANNOT FAIL” arrangement. A
student who fulfills all requirements shall be given a number grade. A student who encounters
difficulties in fulfilling all requirements will get an “In Progress (IP)” grade, and will be given all
the chances to get a grade of “3” or better in the succeeding term. Furthermore, he can sit-in
on the same course without having to pay tuition and other fees. I am optimistic that our
faculty members and officers, working hand-in-hand with our students, can make this
arrangement work.
Those students who will not be able to participate at all in online education due to the absence
or inadequacy of internet bandwidth will get an IP grade and will be allowed to take his courses
on blended learning mode when ECQ ends without the need to re-enroll the course.
Adjustments in laboratory, NSTP, gym and other fees will be reviewed and will be credited
towards the students’ next term tuition fees.

I hope you all stay safe,

(Signed)

Reynaldo B. Vea
