Dr Pepper Snapple Group (http://www.drpeppersnapplegroup.com/): Do they use Castoreum as a "Natural Flavor"
The Issue
Castoreum — a food additive usually listed as ‘natural flavoring’ in the ingredient list. Castoreum is the exudate from the castor sacs of the mature North American Beaver, it is a yellowish secretion in combination with the beaver’s urine, used during scent marking of territory. In the USA, castoreum as a food additive is considered by the Monsanto-owned FDA to be generally recognized as safe, often referenced simply as a “natural flavoring” in products’ lists of ingredients. While it can be used in both foods and beverages as a vanilla, raspberry and strawberry flavoring. Since they refuse to answer when asked directly if this is one of their additives, we must assume that it is indeed being used. Those of us who have an ethical issue with a company that would use the dried perineal glands of the North American beaver as a "fruit flavoring" have the right to know so that we can then make an informed decision whether or not to use their product.
