Make Francis Lewis High School a "screened" only school.

Make Francis Lewis High School a "screened" only school.

The Issue

Francis Lewis High School is rated of the best Community High Schools in Queens. Due to this, the school attracts many students. Some of those that get in are unmotivated and get accepted through the zoned program (The zoned program guarantees those that live in a certain mile radius admission and disregards the population cap a seat at the school). As a result, the school's reputation isn't as high as it could be and hurts those who are motivated when they apply to university. In addition, unmotivated students that get in through the zoned program occasionally take seats in electives that others want, thus creating inconveniences to those that are motivated. Lastly, the maximum capacity for the school is 2,300 students; The current population exceeds this by 176%. With that said, the halls are overly crowded, and it is nearly impossible to find a place to spend a free period in peace.

The zoned program must be taken away. This would solve all of the problems above and many more. Having exclusively screened programs will result in more motivated students, a better reputation, and a lower population.
