Stop CFISD from taking grades for the rest of the year and pass students to the next grade
The Issue
We are in the midst of an unprecedented international crisis in which hundreds and sometimes thousands of people are dying every day due to the COVID-19 virus. Because of the imminent danger of this crisis, medical officials urge that the primary concern of people at home should be preserving our health. However, the Cy-Fair Independent School District has required teachers to start collecting grades. Because of the competitiveness of CFISD, this makes student's main concern preserving and improving the grades that they already have worked all year for. Unsurprisingly, this directly contradicts the advice of medical officials who understand the danger of the virus. Likewise, people in CFISD have already contracted the virus and will continue to contract it due to the infectiousness of the disease. Having the virus makes it difficult to function and often results in the infected person being hospital-bound or bedridden. This would make it close impossible to complete assignments. During this incredibly difficult time when people are losing money, jobs, and even loved ones, the collection of grades adds another unnecessary level of stress and is an incredibly insensitive move by the School District. This is why many other states and school districts have decided to stop collecting grades during this time. CFISD makes its students accustomed to learning in person from teachers. The new online learning system is a large and very sudden departure from the way that many students have been learning for their entire lives. Hence, the grades that are derived from the online learning system are not an accurate reflection of the students' capabilities and shouldn't be able to coexist with the grades derived from in-person learning. Collecting grades for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year would not only be unethical but an inaccurate representation of the students.
