Create and enforce stricter overfishing regulations

The Issue

As a group of juniors in an environmentally based program at Sir Francis Drake High School, we've become deeply concerned for our ocean's future. With over seven billion people living on our planet, and aproxamitly a billion of them depending on fish for survival we are overfishing our waters, depleting them of the necessary life and nutrients they hold. If this continues, our generation is destined for disaster as humans depend on our ocean for sustenance. We must act now to save the planet, as well as our own lives.

As our population continues to grow, commercial vessels in fisheries have developed techniques to catch thousands of fish-but with a major price to pay. In the last 55 years, humans have managed to wipe out 90% of the ocean's top predators. While the government does have regulations on the fishing of commercial vessels, they are rarely enforced, as much as 50% of a fisheries total catch can be caught illegaly.

If our current level of fishing continues, the fish we eat today could disappear within our lifetime. As a nation, we need to stand up for what is environmentally and morally right to save our fish. If our government puts stricter regulations on fishing, we may still have a chance to save the ocean's precious and diverse ecosystem. To make this happen, we need to stand up to the government, asking for stronger regulations, and to actually have them enforced. Make your voice heard by signing this petition today to help save our ocean and the life it supports.
