Two weeks ago, Spring Branch ISD publicly acknowledged that The Breakaways is inappropriate for elementary students. But is that what the district really believes?
Since then, the district’s neglectful inaction suggests that it is uninterested in addressing the root causes that are exposing inappropriate content to young students.
Yesterday, in response to a formal complaint, an SBISD administrator tasked with investigating the issue admitted that she had not yet bothered to even speak with Principal Goodman about The Breakaways — despite the district being aware of Goodman’s approval and defense of the book’s appropriateness. The administrator was unaware if the district had taken the other obvious next step — re-evaluating the third-party services it retains to pre-screen books for appropriateness. When asked if the district has any interest in addressing the root problems, the administrator responded that she would “hope” it does, but failed to offer any evidence that it did.
The Breakaways did not magically appear on the library shelves. The district understands that its own employees and processes are enabling young students to be exposed to inappropriate content. But it doesn’t seem to care.
The district’s complicity makes this petition relevant to all SBISD parents — not just Wilchester parents. Please sign the petition to provide support and to receive email updates about the the district’s continued response to the formal complaint (including potential appeals to Superintendent Blaine and to the SBISD board).
