Since launching the petition, people in the community have expressed confusion about misalignments between information in the petition versus Principal Goodman’s comments elsewhere. It seems Goodman has changed her tune from what she had told Wilchester parents in phone conversations before scrutiny against her intensified.
In phone calls with parents, Goodman was steadfast in her defense of The Breakaways. In addition to the emphasis on “balance,”“mirrors,” and “windows” (as mentioned in the petition), she stressed how “personal beliefs” shouldn’t get in the way of creating a “balanced” library collection. Goodman was given several opportunities to express dissatisfaction about her decision to approve the book for the library; she opted to double down and argue why it should be made available to eight-year-olds.
But in stark contrast to the phone calls, Goodman offered no such defense of the book in the email she subsequently sent to all Wilchester parents last Thursday. Instead, she vaguely referenced “inappropriate material” without clarifying whether she believes the book in question is indeed inappropriate.
The community deserves to know the truth about Goodman’s views and decisions.
