Mandatory Masks in B.C High Schools

Mandatory Masks in B.C High Schools

The Issue

As the flu season rapidly approaches, possible COVID-19 cases will be on the rise. Student’s immune systems and those of their immunocompromised and elderly loved ones will be at higher risk. In addition, anxiety in classrooms is heightened by the sense that there is a lack of protection for students. Schools can not guarantee a controlled environment for students, nor can they push the idea that students are able to interact in cohorts while only contacting those who had direct contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID - 19, while in a classroom where physical distancing is impossible.  For these reasons, we call on the provincial government, the B.C Ministry of Health, Dr. Bonnie Henry, and the B.C Ministry of Education to make masks mandatory in all high school settings.
