"No Barangay Road Widening without Compensation"

No Barangay Road Widening without Compensation
Road Widening is the increasing the width of carriage way to accomodate increased density of traffic. In Section 1, Republic Act No. 676 , declared the national policy to provide concrete barangay roads/multipurpose pavements in all barangays in support of the implementation and promotion of comprehensive rural development and agrarian reform to accelerate the socio-economic-cultural development of the countryside.
Widening the lanes and removing of road obstruction is a great project provided that it undeniably can reduce the risk of head-on crashes by giving drivers more room to get around it without crossing into the opposing lane. Similarly, widening can improve safety, especially for larger vehicles. It can also reduce sideswipe crashes, also helps to improve facilities to pedestrians and cyclists, to achieve fast movement of traffic and thereby reduce pollution. This will somehow decrease accidents. Why? We all know that accidents sometimes is caused by narrow roads; where both riders speed up from opposite side cross path and there is no enough space because the road is very narrow; when riders over speed and there are road obstructions. Considering these, it seemed like road widening is a very well solution for the said problems.
On the other hand, much public criticism directed to this, especially those who have properties that has been and will be affected from the said widening. The reason behind is there was no compensation for their losses and there are also complaints that the conditions given by the owners of those properties affected was not granted. Of course all of us, even I, wanted our properties, if ever they might be affected, to be compensated. It is their right to demand for compensation in spite of it is for the sake of the public, including those owners, large amount or not they still had allotted money in building those indeed.
After the announcement for the road widening, it was stated that concerned citizens in La Union and other areas have protested the cutting of century-old trees along the roadside, even when these were not seen as road obstructions. In Agoo town accordingly, public clamor prompted local officials to suspend the plan to cut more trees. Just in mountain city, they have this road-widening project which has been ongoing on for such a long time now that it annoys drivers and other commuters passing. To add to the anxiety of some long-time residents is the fear that the road-widening project there would literally slice off large portions off their houses. To make matters worse for them is that they would not be properly compensated for their losses or for the value of the sliced off portions of their houses. In many places we go nowadays, whether they be within La Union, Baguio City or elsewhere else in the country, they seem to be affected by the government’s road-widening projects.
'No Barangay Road Widening without Compensation' the clamor in every mind of those been, being and will be affected. Let us help and give our full support to them by signing this petition.
