Light plays a vital role in a human's daily life. Imagine a world without light and only darkness surrounding you. The world will probably be at chaos. With the absence of light, a person cannot do his/her tasks efficiently. It is undeniable that light changed the world with its’ uses and benefits. Now, with the help of light, a person can now do their tasks at night or in dark places. 

Street lights are often found on the edges of roads or paths. Street lighting is incredibly essential due to its benefits.

They are helpful in promoting safety and security in rural and urban areas to artificially extend the hours where activity takes place. There are many situations where street lights can be very useful. There are two instances presented below.

First, the absence of street lights poses many effects, none of which are remotely positive. For one, the rate of vehicular incidents has increased. Without any light to guide them, those driving at night are more likely to get into accidents. 

Second, even pedestrians are at risk; as they cannot see the people around them very well, they could be inadvertently put into dangerous situations.

There have been several instances of crimes being committed at night time this year alone. In April, GMA reported: “Police said Ronaldo Arguelles was kidnapped by armed men in Candelaria, Quezon, on Monday night.” [1] Earlier that month, a gunman was arrested in Calamba City. While it was a relief to see him brought to justice, this was unfortunately done after he had done a long string of crimes, starting with the murder of an engineer on a Friday evening. [2]

Situations like these have made it quite clear to our citizens that criminals have more leeway in the dark, and as such, they feel unsafe walking alone at night. While it certainly won’t solve all sorts of crimes, street lighting provides people a sense of security.

However, in some places, especially places near at the foot of the mountains and places farther from the cities, street lights are nowhere to be seen. Some places may have street lights; however, some are not functioning and in the cases of other street lights, the lights are simply busted.

Here are some examples on why installing of street lights and taking care of it is a must:

1. Street lights make the area feel safer.

2. Street lights are said to decrease accidents.

3. They repel criminals and prevent crimes.

We are calling our government officials and agencies to listen to us. We are speaking for all the people out there who are forced to live in the dark due to absent or dysfunctional street lights.
