Downieville School is a K-12 School in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The school is a great center of learning that supports many community members with their sports and fundraisers. One huge problem is the school‘s mascot is a Native American tribal headdress.

For many reasons, this is a big issue. Having a Native American tribal head, when you’re not Native is very offensive to Indigenous people. In Downieville, we are only taught about the mining aspect of our town’s history. Which ignores the history of indigenous people. The Gold Rush brought diseases, violence, and loss to the Native Tribes. 
Having a Native Headdress is offensive, especially when they do not teach the history of Natives. It is like making a mockery of their suffering.
