It’s More Than The Rebel

Hi all, I’m coming to you nearly three years later to ask for your help again.

When I created this petition, I was responding to the racist and despicable violence that occurred in Charlottesville, VA. Now, our country is once again grappling with the racism of its past and its present. The confederate statues on Richmond’s Monument Avenue will finally be removed, as should have been done years ago.

It’s time for Freeman to do the same.

A number of recent graduates have made a new petition that touches upon a lot of the issues I failed to years ago. They go into the specific issues faced by students of color and outline in no uncertain terms the deep seated racism the name represents. Moreover, they capture the emotion of the current period in a better way than I ever could.

I encourage all of you to read and sign their petition and to share it with the same fervor as you did with this one. Their petition is accessible through the link in this update or through tinyurl.com/itsmorethantherebel. I hope to see all of your names there. In addition, I ask that you contact current Freeman principal John Marshall. The school board was very clear when I met with them—the decision lies with the principal. As a new Principal, he has the power to finally settle what should have been settled so long ago. Show that this issue is still important to you. Keep up the good fight. Black lives matter, now and forever.
