Polar bears have an important roll in the environment, polar bears are at the top of the food chain, polar bears impact the overall health of the marine environment. Polar bears rely on sea ice to help them stay alive, the melting ice is resulting in more polar bears spending longer periods on land. This is putting polar bears and activities on a potential collision course.Offshore petroleum installations and other operations in the Arctic are expected to increase in numbers. This expansion would likely affect polar bears and their habitat in many ways, including the following: Contact with spilled oil which would be fatal. Contact with an oil spill would affect the entire food chain. The noise that is generated from onshore and offshore oil operations would cause disturbance to the polar bears. We have already done so much such as • wrote the scientific petition to protect the bear under the Endangered Species Act, filed suit twice with partners to compel a response to our petition, earning the bear federal protection in 2008,challenged a Bush-era rule that robs the species of protections from its main threats, went to court to defend the bear’s federal protections from those who would undo them, spurred the administration to propose protecting 128 million acres of polar bear habitat: the largest critical habitat proposal in Endangered Species Act history. One more thing you could do is donate to National Wildlife Federation, without our donations National Wildlife Federation wouldn’t be able to restore habitats and advocate on behalf of wildlife in harm’s way. When you donate your donation goes straight to helping endangered polar bears and many more endangered species.
