Doug Steiner and Bozzuto: Replace Iowa Sports at the Hub

The Issue

We represent hundreds of residents living at the Hub Brooklyn (333 Schermerhorn Street), a building that markets itself as a luxury building. For years, residents have endured operational failures that have nothing to do with the quality of the building, or even the overall building management (Bozzuto), and everything to do with a third-party vendor hired to run the building’s amenities.

That vendor is Iowa Sports.

Iowa Sports manages our package room, Club333 (the building’s 3rd floor amenity spaces), and the Sky Lounge. We regularly poll residents to make data-based decisions on where there is the most energy, and the results are unambiguous:

  • 91% of residents who voted want Iowa Sports replaced.
  • Only 2% want our property manager (Bozzuto) replaced. This is not generalized frustration. It is specifically about Iowa.
  • All 3 of the top 3 most-voted resident concerns are Iowa-managed. This mirrors our most recent (January) survey, in which 13 of the 15 worst-rated issues in the building fell under Iowa Sports’ management.

The failures span every space Iowa touches:

  • Package room failures: months of severe delays from inadequate staffing. For months, 86% of residents reported waiting two+ days between delivery and package room availability, with 95% rating delivery-to-availability speed as the top concern in the building.
  • Amenity hours have not returned to pre-pandemic levels (5AM to midnight).
  • Cleaning staff hours have been cut, contributing to over 100 reported cleanliness and pest incidents in the 3rd floor amenity spaces.
  • Club333 facilities are poorly maintained: broken gym equipment, broken showers, broken front door, inconsistent WiFi.
  • Outside trainers were removed without a viable replacement plan.
  • Extremely high staff turnover: at least 7 Iowa Sports GMs and Assistant GMs have left in the last 5 years.
  • Despite all of this, amenity prices continue to increase: Club333 membership, guest fees, grill rental.

None of this was inevitable. All of it traces back to Iowa Sports’ management, which regularly blames staff for management’s own failures, from poor resource allocation and uninformed decision-making to impulsive policy changes that anger residents.

Staff and middle managers are doing their best inside a system that is short-staffed and badly run. The accountability sits with Iowa Sports leadership and the building owners and managers who continue to keep them in place.

We have done everything within our power to surface these concerns through legitimate, private channels. We have requested meetings dozens of times. We have submitted detailed surveys. We have raised specific, achievable operational demands. The only response we have received:

“We understand the concerns that have been raised regarding the Club and Valet operations. We’re working to improve such operations.”

We are now publicly calling on Doug Steiner (owner) and Bozzuto (property manager) to replace Iowa Sports as the vendor running amenity services at the Hub.

We are not going away. We are organized. And we are growing.
