Tarion's "independent mediation" program was created under Ontario Premier Ford's watch. Finally there has been some recognition of the issues with this program thanks to the Toronto Star April 30, 2024 article.

It appears that trust was already recognized as an issue for Tarion, given that it has a 2024 strategic objective of "being a trusted resource". But their "major activity" related to "being a trusted resource" is to extend their work on a "consumer awareness strategy". 

Tarion's 2024 business plan (p. 13) also says that they are working "in partnership" with the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery (MPBSD). 

The Toronto Star article reported that Tarion plans an "internal review" of their mediation program. This is not adequate or appropriate. Consumers need an EXTERNAL audit/review of this entire Tarion mediation program since its 2021 inception, including the role of MPBSD.

The Toronto Star's April 30, 2024 article may be only the "tip of the iceberg". For example, how can MPBSD be a "partner" with Tarion & also "oversee" Tarion? (MPBSD forces Tarion to pay MPBSD an "oversight" fee annually. Millions of dollars have been paid by Tarion since about 2009.)

MPBSD's Min. Todd McCarthy recently posted this photo of himself on X/Twitter & also referenced working with Tarion. 

Serious problems have existed with the organization now called Tarion since it was created in 1976. Now, under the watch of the Ford Government, new serious problems are being created.

In addition to an external audit/review of Tarion's "independent mediation", there's also an ongoing and critical need for an independent review of ON's Delegated Administrative Authority (DAA) model. 

Note: There are more than 10 DAAs reporting into MPBSD, e.g., Tarion, Home Construction Regulatory Authority, Electrical Safety Authority, and they are all required to pay a mandatory annual oversight fee to MPBSD.
