Mise à jour sur la pétitionEnd Tarion’s new home warranty monopoly NOW: Give Ontarians a choice!Ford Gov't introduced new consumer protection legislation but nothing was included re Tarion

Last week the Ford Government introduced Bill 142, the Better for Consumers, Better for Businesses Act, 2023.

There are a number of changes being proposed like clarifying roles for gift cards and a monthly free credit report. Ok, these sorts of initiatives are a step in the right direction for some Ontario consumers.

But Bill 142 is mum on Tarion.

Sadly Bill 142 is tinkering at the margins instead of getting the big problems fixed. It's far from what Ontarians purchasing a newly built home need and deserve.

Once again, the Ford Government is protecting builders/developers rather than consumers.

When is the Ford Government going to address the biggest consumer protection problem in Ontario: Protecting consumers who buy newly built homes?

How can you help?

Please take a couple of minutes and write to your provincial MPP and tell them that Bill 142 needs to be amended to address the longstanding issues with Tarion.

What's the best way to do that? Do what Justice Cunningham recommended in 2016 - End Tarion's monopoly and introduce a competitive, multi-provider model for warranty protection.

That's what much of the rest of Canada has.

That's what the PCs supported before they were elected in 2018.

That's what was recommended by the Ford Government's own consultation (which they swept under the rug).
