We are hearing from various corners of Ontario that some PC MPPs are circulating a petition re Tarion. There are several questions/issues with this petition including:
- who has authored it? Why is no MPP named on the petition? MPP Nicholls office has sent it out, and when we asked that office where it came from, they would not say. Further, MPP Nicholls' assistant said "..this is not to say that this office supports or agrees with the petition..."
- the petition covers what the Wynne gov't already did with the Liberals' legislation to separate the regulator and warranty roles. Why does the Ford Gov't continue to try to make it look like splitting these roles was their initiative?
- why is a petition needed at all? Why are the PCs just not tabling legislation? This petition is confusing many who have received it. Some sections are quite vague.
- why will the PCs not say how many of Justice Cunningham's 37 recommendations have been accepted? This petition barely scratches the surface of what Justice Cunningham recommended. It does not nearly provide for adequate consumer protection in Ontario.
- this PC petition refers to only "exploring the feasibility of a multi-provider insurance-based model". Justice Cunningham recommended ending Tarion's monopoly.
This petition is another very sad turn of events from the PCs since they were elected in June 2018. Why is the Ford Government not doing what it said it would do before the election?
