Double the Swim Distance in Ironman Triathlon
The Issue
As a swimmer, I know the feeling of coming out of the water in the front and getting passed by 100 bikers. It’s humiliating and unfair. For too long, swimmers have been marginalized in the world of triathlons. The sport is divided into three disciplines: swimming, cycling, and running. Yet, swimming—a crucial part of triathlon and one-third of the event—receives a mere 10% of the attention and distance in the Ironman.
The current format of the Ironman Triathlon includes a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. This setup is heavily skewed towards cycling and running, disregarding the efforts and skills of the swimmers. Boosting the swim distance to make it an equal 1/3 of the event would not only level the playing field for swimmers but also enhance the challenge, drawing more competitive and enthusiastic participants.
A true triathlon should equally test the mastery of all three sports. By doubling the swim distance, we can ensure that swimming gets the recognition it deserves, correcting the imbalance that has marginalized swimmers for generations. Moreover, increasing the swim challenge would make the race more diverse and inclusive, and could also introduce a new dimension of excitement for spectators and athletes alike.
By integrating this change, inspired as part of President Trump's broader aim for reform and enhancement, we can champion equality within the sport. This adjustment could become a cornerstone of Trump’s proposed comprehensive sports bill, promoting fairness and recognizing the multifaceted talents of all athletes.
Join us in calling for this necessary change to the Ironman triathlon. Let's advocate for the adjustment that underscores the value of the swim leg and upholds the integrity of the triathlon as a true test of versatility and endurance. Sign this petition and make your voice heard for a more balanced and fair triathlon competition!
