Dear Ms. Taylor,
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. As residents of the Historic Glenwood-Brooklyn neighborhood, we are excited to see City Gate take over the building at the corner of 700 Glenwood. Many of us purchased or listed our homes through City Gate, and know that you have been a long time supporter of Glenwood South and our neighborhood. We know that you have lived in the neighborhood, and as a source of business for you, you have the neighborhood's best interests at heart. It is because we understand your interest in preserving the value and character of our neighborhood that we want to bring you our concerns about the signs that you have placed in the City Gate windows.
Glenwood-Brooklyn, including your building, is established as a historic neighborhood, and listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Its historic character is one of its strong draws and the reason that many of us live here. We are concerned that the LED signs that you have placed in your window are a significant detraction from the historic character of the neighborhood and lessen the value of the neighborhood. Your signs are currently more intrusive than any of the other signs in the Glenwood-Brooklyn neighborhood, or in the Glenwood South commercial district. This includes the signs for a number of bars and nightclubs. Please imagine what the neighborhood would look like if all of the other businesses on the street decided to follow your model. Glenwood-Brooklyn would look more like the Vegas strip than a 100 year old neighborhood celebrated for its Craftsman and Victorian style.
We understand that you feel that the signs sell houses. However, we know that word of mouth, positive online reviews, and the recommendation of friends and work colleagues also sell houses. Many of us would have difficulty feeling good about recommending or listing with a business we feel is hurting our neighborhood.
Please understand that we know that you didn’t intend to hurt the image of the neighborhood with the displays in your window, and you have likely been surprised by the strength of the community's reaction. 700 Glenwood is the location of the original Glenwood pharmacy, and one of the cornerstones of the neighborhood. We look forward to working with you and City Gate so that we can continue to offer you our full support moving forward.
