As consumers, we are occasionally reminded to recycle our paper, plastic and aluminum waste among other recyclable waste we may have. Even when we do toss our waste in the recycle bin, though, it often ends up in a landfill anyway. This is the unfortunate truth about recycling.

When presented with statistics about the small fraction of waste that actually gets recycled, the consumer is often blamed for being selfish and careless, not making the effort to put their waste in a recycle bin. This is a lie. The real reason so little is actually recycled is because it costs more to recycle materials (like plastic) than to just make more. Recycling is, in many cases, a hardly profitable business, which is why so little actually takes place.

By requiring companies to make packaging out of affordably recyclable materials, we can improve this crisis of waste management. If recycling becomes profitable, we will see an increase in the amount of waste that gets recycled, decrease in the waste that harms our environment, and new jobs generated for recycling plant workers. With the incentive of profit, companies will begin to collect recyclables from areas without recycling services.

Let’s make this happen!
