When good church camps become big business, bad things happen. When the non-conforming use camp is situated in a single family residential area, it’s not good for the neighborhood nor for religion. Big trucks bring in food and big trucks haul away the waste. Commercial kitchens feed paying clients who descend in groups with little more piety than maybe saying grace. Camp Zion in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin, has applied to be in that business: a resort in our residential backyard.

Sponsored by the Christian Catholic Church in Zion, Illinois, Camp Zion, once a low-key children’s camp, has become inspired to compete in Door County, a tourist’s paradise, as a tourist attraction with the lowest prices in town, since they have volunteer help and pay no taxes.

The massive new building (12,000 square feet) the camp proposes to construct among our homes, and the new uses to which it will be put, are inconsistent with the Town of Liberty Grove and Door County, Wisconsin comprehensive plans. As neighbors whose properties are adjacent to and surround Camp Zion, we oppose granting a Conditional Use Permit for this immense new building and expanded uses.
