Donkeys and mules are cruelly used on the Amalfi Coast, where building materials have to be transported along narrow, steep paths sometimes having to walk thousands of steps. They are overloaded with quintals of building material that needs to be transported from one village to another at any temperature. Walking along the coast road, you can meet some of them while they are being loaded. Are they beaten? Well, if they seem not to be able to walk under a scroching sun and be fast (because naturally time is money) obviously they beat them! An animalist who talked about the hard work of donkeys and mules was censored by a local television company. Donkeys and mules have to toil and suffer in silence! But we humans, if endowed with a moral sense, can and must rebel for them. In Italy, an article of the penal code regarding animal abuse provides that "whoever, for cruelty or without necessity, harms an animal or subjects it to torture or fatigue that is intolerable to him, is punished with imprisonment from 3 to 18 months, or with a fine of between 5,000 and 30,000 euros. The penalty is increased by half if the animal dies because of this". Do the municipal administrations enforce the law? Are those who subject the animals to unbearable fatigue really fined in the end? The coast is beautiful, but for the donkeys and the mules it is hell. Each of us must take a stand for them. The coast thrives on tourism, but we only go there if they are able to behave like civilized people, not mistreating animals.
