A few months ago, I emailed Professor Ronald Mallett about his laser time machine coming to fruition and he sent me an series of new information that will be surprising to some people.

 

July 25th: 

"Within the framework of Einstein's classical general theory of relativity, it doesn't appear as though one can go back in time earlier than when the time machine is turned on. However, it's not clear how quantum mechanics may affect that".

 

August 8th:

"The following is a summary of the project where things currently stand financially. The Space-Time Twisting by Light (STL) project is divided into two phases. Phase 1 involves experimentally demonstrating that a circulating light beam such as that produced by a ring laser would lead to a twisting of space that is known as gravitational frame dragging. This is a crucial phase that needs to be established. This in itself is a new physical prediction that was the result of my theoretical work based on Einstein's general theory of relativity. Funding for phase1 is divided up into two parts. The first part will be a feasibility study with a estimated cost of $250,000. I need to emphasise very strongly that this will not lead to a time machine. This is just a feasibility study for the gravitational frame dragging by light portion of the project. The necessary funding for the first phase has not yet been achieved.

 

I should mention that even with phase1 there could be an important potential practical spinoff due to the warping of space by circulating laser beams. This would be in the form of ultrafast information transfer.

 

If the project is shown to be feasible, then funding for the second part of phase 1 would be for the actual experiments. The cost of the second part would be determined by the feasibility study. However, the cost would probably be many millions of dollars for the actual experiments. The total estimated time for phase 1 with adequate funding would be about five years.

 

If the predicted gravitational frame dragging or space twisting by light of phase 1 is seen then we would go on to phase which would be to experimentally show that this twisting of space. leads to a twisting of time which would lead to time travel. It is not possible at this point to estimate cost of phase 2.

 

I need to emphasise again that the startup amount would only support the feasibility study for phase 1 of the project. It would not lead directly to a time machine. The work I'm dealing with is a scientific project that could take decades.
